Located in Dublin 8, Portobello Physiotherapy Clinic is one of Ireland’s best for multiple reasons. Firstly, they offer a wide selection of treatments to treat multiple conditions.

Some of these conditions include sports and work-related injuries, avulsion and stress fracture, pain in the ankle, wrist, shoulder, hip, neck, and many more.

They conduct pre and post-natal pilates for women and provide home visits to elderly patients who have difficulty attending their clinic. Some of the ailments they treat for senior patients are osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, poor mobility, imbalance, and so on.

And aside from a long list of other conditions such as body pain, they have treatments specifically for injuries and other health issues related to performing arts. Such treatments are carried by Dr Juliet Bressan, president of Performing Arts Medicine Ireland.

As regards Portobello’s team, what’s great about them is that all have a deep background in sports—some are former athletes while others have worked extensively in the sports industry.

This is important because sports-related injuries are one of the foremost reasons people require physiotherapy.

Meanwhile, Portobello’s availability and accessibility are other features that make it patient-friendly. It has long clinic hours, is readily accessible via bus, and is also wheelchair-accessible as it is located on the ground floor.

Pros

  • Large team
  • Open until Saturday
  • Long weekday clinic hours
  • Wheelchair-accessible
  • Offers massage and physiotherapy vouchers
  • Conducts home visits and online pilates
  • Offers video/phone consultations

Cons

  • Closed on Sundays
  • Shorter operating hours on Saturdays

“Brendan Ho was my physio during a period of 9 weeks. From the get go he was brilliant, all with the focus of getting me back to regularly partaking and competing in support. I would recommend him as well as the whole Portobello Physio staff to anybody, from high performance sports people to anybody just looking for a sports massage! Won’t go to any other physio now, top notch service!” -Fionn McNally

“I have been going to Portobello now for 4 months for a frozen shoulder. My GP strongly recommend Dave, and I strongly agree. I have made great improvement under Dave’s care and strongly recommend to use Portobello.” -G B

“Excellent physiotherapy in all aspects – initial assessment, rehab programme and general level of service/responsiveness. 100% recommend.” -Padraig Daly

OPERATING HOURS7:00 am to 8:00 pm (Monday – Friday)

Founded in 2001, one of the notable things about Douglas Chiropractic and Physiotherapy Clinic is—from the name itself—that it houses both chiropractors and physiotherapists to treat various conditions.

While both practices are related, they utilise different techniques to treat numerous ailments from the head and neck down to the ankles and feet. Hence, this gives patients more options for treatments.

Moreover, Douglas’s has a large team that comprises 2 chiropractors and 4 physiotherapists, with each having a dedicated treating room. And because of this, having to wait for other patients most likely won’t be a problem here in this Cork-based clinic.

They also offer other treatments found in other physiotherapy clinics such as dry needling, laser therapy, and orthotics.

Douglas’s convenience, in terms of transport, is another thumbs-up for us. It’s located next to the bus stop opposite a petrol station on Douglas Road; plus, there’s less hassle for vehicle owners due to its private parking.

Unfortunately, they’re not open on weekends. At least, their clinic hours are up to 8:00 pm.

Pros

  • Offers chiro and physio treatments
  • Large team
  • Multiple treatment rooms
  • Has private parking
  • Located near bus stop
  • Long clinic hours

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Doesn’t offer online consultations

Below are some great sentiments from their clients:

“Highly recommend. Efficient, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Had experience in both the chiropractor and the physio there. At first was barely able to stand straight or walk over the pain in my lower back. After the first session I noticed a considerable change and it has been improving ever since with each session.” -Paul

“This clinic is awesome! Professional services, friendly staff and calming atmosphere.” -Henrique Alexandre

“Diagnosed an underlying condition that had been missed by others for many years.” -James Hurley

If you’re into fitness or you’re just getting started, we recommend Sports Physio Ireland, a Dublin-based physiotherapy clinic. Sports Physio offers several fitness programmes for you to get in shape, all of which are carried out by its physiotherapists.

For those who wish to train within the clinic, they have physio-led personal training that comes with a 21-day trial period. For this, they not only have an indoor gym but outdoor facilities as well.

However, you can also avail of their fitness training in the comfort of your own home. Sports Physio offers a number of online fitness programmes which includes strength and conditioning sessions, pilates routines, mobility routines, and more.

But if you’re not yet ready to commit to these programmes, you can avail of their free trial classes to see whether their programmes are a good fit for you.

Moreover, one of these programmes, the fitness for life platform, is offered for free for clients over 60.

Of course, Sports Physio is still a clinic, not just a gym. This clinic has a team of 6 physiotherapists that treat an extensive list of conditions ranging from foot pain to the lower back, among others.

And aside from general and sports physiotherapy, they also provide surgical physiotherapy. Some of the surgeries they treat and manage (both before and after surgery) include cartilage injury, lateral hip tendinitis, sacro-iliac pain, and others.

  • 21-day trial period for onsite fitness programme
  • Free trial classes for online fitness programmes
  • Open until Saturday
  • Long weekday clinic hours

Customer Reviews

Take a look at some great reviews about this clinic:

“I can highly recommend Sports Physio Ireland. I have been attending classes with James over the last number of months and I feel stronger, fitter and really enjoy the positive atmosphere. He helps you tailor exercises so you can get the most out of your workout and keeps the momentum for the going until the very last minute.” Danie Holland

“Would highly recommend Robert Sheehan for sports related injuries. I had seen other physios for chronic pain I had from a sports injury but nothing was working. After a few sessions with Rob and a tailored rehab plan, I’m finally back playing sport pain-free. Rob is also excellent at explaining what the cause of the problem is and how to fix it. The deficiencies I had that led to the injury have also been addressed via rehab and I feel more confident again on the pitch.” -Cillian Ryan

Rebalance Physiotherapy is not just noteworthy for its services but its contribution to the environment as well. These efforts include using recycled paper, eco-friendly cleaning products, ordering from package-free suppliers, to name some.

In terms of its treatments, Rebalance Physiotherapy offers sports injury, post-surgery, and vestibular rehab, among others. They also provide antenatal pilates for expecting mothers.

And from what we’ve seen, this clinic is the only one on this list to provide shockwave therapy. The conditions that benefit from this include hip bursitis, tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis, and more.

Moreover, you can also avail yourself of Rebalance Physiotherapy’s online consultation. For 30 minutes, you can have your questions answered and injury assessed and even be provided with your online rehab program.

However, one of the downsides of this clinic is its small team. Rebalance Physiotherapy only has 2 physiotherapists, both of which are men—something that might not sit well with some women.

And they’re only open until Friday, but as late as 8:00 pm. Still, note that a lot of their patients, both men and women, have rated them with 5 stars for their services.

Pros

  • Long clinic hours
  • 3 treatment rooms
  • Offers online consultation
  • Only one on list to offer shockwave therapy

Cons

  • Small team
  • Closed on weekends

One of the most trusted clinics in Dublin is Archview Physiotherapy Pain and Sports Injury Clinic, which has been operating since 2008. It has two branches in the city — one in Ranelagh and the other in Dundrum.

It has a team of four physiotherapists, three physical therapists, two massage therapists, and a sports therapist. With its large team, it can accommodate more customers, not to mention that it’s open 7 days a week unlike other clinics.

Aside from physiotherapy, it also offers physical therapy, sports therapy, clinical pilates, massage therapy, personal training, and dry needling. One of their approaches for treating sports injuries is kinesio-taping, which is a relatively new method that not all clinics implement.

Although they provide phone and video consultations for a low price, such services are only available with selected therapists. Also, compared to others we’ve researched, they have limited special offers or discounts.

Nevertheless, they’re still worth your time and money as you can expect quality services for good prices.

Pros

  • Comprehensive range of services
  • Large team to accommodate more customers
  • Clinics in Ranelagh and Dundrum
  • Offers home-visit physiotherapy sessions
  • Open 7 days a week

Cons

  • Limited discount offers for returning customers

Customer Reviews

Here are some of the comments from their past clients:

“I started physio with Edwina when I ended up on crutches due to severe sciatica pain in the very late stages of my pregnancy. During the six sessions and just prior to my due date I experienced huge improvements from Edwina’s treatment. The physio treatment resulted in me being 100% recovered in time for my due date and baby’s smooth arrival. Thank you so so much! Kind Regards, Jean” -Jean Santry

“I have just had a couple of sessions with Eileen to help rehabilitate my stiff neck and shoulders.I have an ongoing issue for 5 years.(Alyssa who is my chiropractor in Archview recommended I see Eileen. Alyssa by the way is amazing and a credit to her profession. She has improved my spine dramatically and the pain I used to feel on a daily basis is becoming a thing of the past)Eileen too is top of her game, she is dedicated to helping me get better. She is so knowledgeable when it comes to the muscles and how they work. She has done some fantastic dry needling, massage and stretches on me.I have seen 3 physios before finding archview and she stands out way ahead of them all. Also the stretches Eileen has given me to do at home are perfect for me.I look forward to continuing my treatments here as I have finally found the right therapists and I dont need to look any further ..it only took me 5 years of trial and error!!” -Shelley Bartley

“I have been going to Edwina for several months now trying to deal with an old shoulder and neck injury that I never properly dealt with. Between many dry needling sessions, soft tissue massages and advice and demonstrations of exercises, this 4 year old injury is starting to show real progress. Edwina is wonderful to work with and keeps in touch with you outside of your appointment, sending on exercise demonstrations, etc. Can’t recommend her highly enough!” -Bronagh Foley

Physio Clinic’s goal is to provide a world-class physiotherapy service. Ross Allen, their lead clinical physiotherapist, has three qualifications, (1) B.Sc. (Hons) Physiotherapy; M.I.S.C.P., (2) Doctor of Chiropractic; B. Sc. (Hons); M.C.A.I., and Dip. Sports Injury Therapist.

A reason why people prefer to contact them for physiotherapy services is that Ross specialises in cases that have not responded to previous treatments.

One previous client mentioned that they used to have a sore back and struggled to walk, but after the second session with Dr. Ross, they were so impressed with their treatment that they would have given more than 5 stars in their rating. Another client said that he came to Dr. Ross with an unresolved and undiagnosed back injury, however, under Ross’s guidance and expertise, he was able to go through a specific rehabilitation programme for 6 weeks that corrected his issue.

The client stated that Dr. Ross utilises a unique holistic approach while also applying physiotherapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture techniques. In one of the reviews, it said that they would definitely recommend Physio Clinic to their family and friends because they were impressed with how quickly their staff spotted their issue and treated it immediately with care.

How to Choose the Right Physiotherapy Clinic

To help you in your search, consider the following tips below:

1. Know what you need

Aside from providing treatments for back pain, sports injuries, rehab, and more, some physiotherapists also provide fitness sessions such as pilates classes.

Hence, if you’re after treatment and also want to get fitter, check with your prospective clinic for their fitness programmes.

2. Clinic hours

No matter how good a physiotherapy clinic is, it won’t be of help to you if its clinic hours don’t fit your schedule. When you book an appointment, make sure they’re open during the most frequent days and hours you’re free.

3. Accessibility

Aside from clinic hours, the location of the clinic matters as well. Especially if you don’t have your own car, pick a clinic that’s near public transport.

And if you’ve got mobility issues, it’s a good idea to check if the physiotherapy clinic is disability friendly.

4. Male and female physiotherapists

Physiotherapy involves physical contact. For some people, the gender of their physiotherapist poses no problem, but if you’re concerned about this, check the clinic’s team if they have either male or female therapists.

5. Private treatment rooms

A clinic with private treatment rooms can make the treatment session with your physiotherapist more comfortable. You can discuss your health issues with him or her honestly and won’t have to be distracted by other patients watching you.
